Bulgaria has four distinct seasons, and generally has a favourable climate making this one of its great features. Summer tends to be the most comfortable time in Bulgaria with low humidity and temperatures around 24 degrees C (75 degrees F). Winter temperatures are cold and with snowfall, and average about 0 degrees C (32 F).

In the capital of Sofia, the average temperature in January is between -4 degrees C and 2 degrees C. The July temperatures are between 16 and 27 degrees. The climate of the eastern side of the country along the Black Sea is milder than the climate in the interior of Bulgaria. The average January temperatures are between -1 and 6 degrees, and the July temperature ranges from 19 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The climate in Northern Bulgaria is moderate continental while the climate in South Bulgaria is intermediate continental tending to Mediterranean. A Mediterranean climate of dry summers and mild humid winters prevails in the valley of the South-western Rhodope Mountains. The average annual temperature is about 13 degrees Celsius. (55 degrees F) Average rainfall is 635 mm (25 inches) per year. The wettest period is early summer in most of the country, with the exception of the southern valleys where most rains fall in the autumn or the winter.  Bulgaria’s mountain groups also play a significant role in some of the country’s climatic variations.
