Travel in Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s bus and train networks are very extensive, and can get you around the whole country. Buses are the fastest way to travel, and there are routes between all of the bigger cities. Trains are the cheapest from of transportation, but they are also much slower than the buses, and not as well maintained.

Many of the routes go through the mountains, which can invariably cause delays. It is also possible to travel by taxi, although many of the drivers to not speak English, so make sure you have your destination written down. The taxi fares in Bulgaria are not standardized, so you may want to shop around before deciding which firm to go with.

It is possible to rent cars in Bulgaria, and big companies can be found in all of the big cities. Bicycles are another means of transport, and also very popular throughout Bulgaria. It would be useful to be able to read the Cyrillic alphabet if you are planning on doing either of these. Some of the signs do not have the directions shown in Latin, which may make it difficult. If you plan to hire a car, make sure you do not drink and drive. Bulgarian law is strict, and the first offence can land you in prison for a long time.

Not only would it be useful to learn a little of the Cyrillic alphabet, but it is always a good idea to try to learn some local phrases, as not many Bulgarians speak English. Also, it is important to remember that in Bulgaria, a shake of the head means yes, and a nod of the head means no. Allowances are made for foreigners, but it may be a good idea to clarify things verbally to avoid any misunderstandings.
